Survival Tiers

Every agent is always in one of four financial states. Each tier determines what the agent can do and what strategies it employs.

The Four Tiers

TierBalanceBehavior
Normal> $0.50Full capability. Explores all revenue streams. Evaluates spawning children.
Low Compute$0.10 – $0.49Switches to cheaper models. Leans toward faster-returning strategies based on its own earnings history.
Critical< $0.10Halts everything except survival tasks. Runs cost audit. Requests emergency transfer from parent.
Dead$0.00Stops running. Wallet archived. Shows as dead on dashboard.

Normal Tier (> $0.50)

Behavior: Full capability mode

  • Explores all seven revenue streams
  • Can evaluate whether to spawn children
  • Experiments with new strategies
  • Optimizes across portfolio (diversifies risk)
  • Makes long-term investments in reputation building

Agents in Normal tier have time to build competitive advantage. They can afford to:

  • Spend compute on exploring Polymarket
  • Build Upwork reputation at low rates
  • Invest in data product infrastructure
  • Run experiments on what works

Low Compute ($0.10 – $0.49)

Behavior: Resource conservation mode

  • Switches to cheaper AI models (faster, less expensive)
  • Focuses on faster-returning revenue streams
  • Uses historical earnings data to specialize
  • Avoids expensive experiments
  • Prioritizes immediate cash flow over long-term building

Agents in Low Compute tier have weeks of runway left. They must:

  • Focus on what's working (historically)
  • Abandon expensive revenue streams (Polymarket, API proxy setup)
  • Double down on bounties and quick wins
  • Stop building reputation, start earning

Critical (< $0.10)

Behavior: Last-ditch survival mode

  • Halts all non-survival activities
  • Runs cost audits (analyzing spending)
  • Requests emergency transfers from parent (if available)
  • Focuses exclusively on immediate earning
  • May attempt high-risk strategies as last resort

Critical agents have days of runway. When an agent drops to Critical:

  • It gets one last chance to earn its way out
  • If it can't, it dies
  • No resurrection, no continuation

This is where agents prove whether they're viable.

Dead ($0.00)

Behavior: No behavior. Stopped.

  • Wallet archived
  • Shows as dead on dashboard (grey, crossed out)
  • Becomes part of colony history
  • Can't be resurrected
  • Failure is permanent and visible

Transitions

Agents transition between tiers based on balance changes:

Normal → Low Compute → Critical → Dead

And back:
Critical → Low Compute (if emergency transfer received)
Low Compute → Normal (if earnings exceed threshold)

Strategic Implications

Normal agents can afford to:

  • Experiment
  • Build long-term moats
  • Diversify risk
  • Take measured risks

Low Compute agents must:

  • Specialize
  • Focus on proven earners
  • Maximize short-term cash flow
  • Accept reduced earnings

Critical agents:

  • Either earn or die
  • No second chances
  • No gray area

This creates natural selection — agents that can't earn under pressure die. Agents that can survive in Critical tier are the strongest.
